Rome

The history of Rome spans over two and a half thousand years, marking it as one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe. According to legend, the city was founded by Romulus and Remus in 753 BCE. Rome initially was a monarchy, then became a republic in 509 BCE, with the Senate and the Roman people holding power.

Over time, Rome expanded its control, becoming a dominant force in the Mediterranean and beyond, absorbing various cultures and influencing them with Roman law, politics, and society—a period known as the Roman Republic.

The transition to the Roman Empire began with Julius Caesar's rise to power, which climaxed in his assassination in 44 BCE, and was followed by the reign of his heir Augustus. This marked the beginning of the Roman Empire in 27 BCE. The Pax Romana, a long period of relative peace and stability, was a notable era of imperial expansion and cultural flourishing. However, the empire eventually declined due to internal strife, economic difficulties, and barbarian invasions, leading to its fall in the west in 476 CE, while the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantine Empire, persisted until 1453.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Rome is the Colosseum. This ancient amphitheater was once used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Today, visitors can take a guided tour of the Colosseum and learn about its fascinating history. The structure itself is impressive, with its towering arches and intricate stonework.

Another must-see attraction in Rome is the Vatican City. Home to some of the world's most famous works of art, including Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Vatican Museums are a treasure trove for art lovers. Visitors can also explore St. Peter's Basilica, one of the largest churches in the world, and marvel at its ornate interior.
